History of the Zambia Army

Major General Casimir Michael Grigg CBE (25 February 1917 - 30 January 2015) was a British Officer who braved machine gun fire during the invasion of Sicily in 1943. In January 1964, he took command of the Northern Rhodesia Army. The country became the Republic of Zambia on 24th October that year and HE Kenneth David Kaunda appointed Major General Grigg as Zambia Army's First Commander. He served until 1967 when he was retired and was succeeded by Major General TS Reids, who commanded the Army up to December 1970.

Until 1970 most of the officers, including the Army Commander, were seconded from the British Army. In 1967 Zambia decided to recruit expatriate officers for the Zambia Army until 1978 when most expatriate officers had their contracts come to an end. On December 28, 1970, General Kingsley Chinkuli took over as the First indigenous Zambia Army Commander.
